DOCTOR WHO may be a brand new show for Saturday nights on BBC1 but the program his a history as long as a stripy multi-coloured scarf.
The program was first broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday 23 November 1963. The days of black and white television and only three UK national television channels. It was devised as an adventure science fiction (with more than a hint of an educational element) drama series for all the family.
The program continued to shown on BBC tv until 1989 (twenty-six years!), then returned in 1996 with a TV movie, and now, in 2005, returns with a brand new series.
The central character was (and still is) a friendly, mysterious time-space traveling alien who calls himself 'the Doctor'.
He journeys through time-space in a craft called the TARDIS (an acronym that stands for 'Time And Relative Dimension In Space').
In his space-time craft, the Doctor can travel anywhere - he can move through space, forward in time, backward in time, sideways and throughout our current time.
You are in for another trip of your lifetime.
Look out for an exciting range of collectable based on series one and the newly released series two.
