In a small, prim Victorian town,wealthy fish merchants, Nell & William Van Dort, are set to marry off their son Victor to Victoria, the shy, pretty daughter of local aristocrats Maudeline & Finis Everglot. When the Van Dorts come to the home of the Everglots for a proper introduction and a wedding rehearsal, Victor so clumsily botches his wedding vows that Pastor Gaslwells cancels the rehearsal and refuses to marry the two until Victor properly learns his lines.
In the wake of this disastrous rehearsal, Victor stumbles into the woods and practices his vows in front of a gnarled old tree. He even goes so far as to place the wedding ring meant for Victoria onto a tree root. As fate would have it, Victor does the vows so perfectly that the tree root grabs hold of him. The root reveals itself as the decaying corpse of a woman wearing the tattered remains of a wedding gown. It’s the Corpse Bride.™
